IMPORTANT: Attach Antenna Before Powering On!
Always connect an antenna to your device BEFORE plugging in USB or turning it on. Transmitting without an antenna can permanently damage the LoRa radio chip. Even a few seconds of transmission without an antenna can cause irreversible damage. This applies to flashing AND normal use.
Step 1: Enter DFU/Bootloader Mode
Method: Button Hold + Double USB-C Connect
- 1 Hold the device button down
- 2 While holding, quickly connect the USB-C cable twice in a row
- 3 The LED goes solid and an "X1" / "X1-BOOT" drive appears on your computer
- 4 Copy the .uf2 firmware file onto that drive
- 5 Device reboots automatically into the new firmware
Note: First boot after switching firmware families (Meshtastic to MeshCore or back) can take about 30 seconds while settings storage reformats
Step 2: Install Drivers (if needed)
nRF52840 appears as USB mass storage in bootloader mode

MeshCore Setup
- Device reboots into MeshCore automatically
- Connect via Bluetooth using the MeshCore app
- Set your region radio preset (defaults to EU; US meshes typically use 910.525 MHz / BW 250 / SF 10)
- GPS is off by default to save battery; enable it in node settings if you want position reporting
Meshtastic Setup
- Ships pre-flashed with Meshtastic out of the box
- Connect via Bluetooth using the Meshtastic app
- Set region to US (915 MHz)
- Configure your Long Name and Short Name
US Users: Set frequency/region to 915 MHz (US). This ensures compatibility with the NodakMesh network and other US mesh networks!
