GMRS Radios

GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) is the step up from FRS walkie talkies. It uses the same 462 and 467 MHz channels but allows much more power, removable antennas and repeaters. Handhelds are typically 5 watts, and mobiles can run up to 50 watts on the main channels.

It takes a license, but no test. You apply through the FCC, pay $35, and the license lasts 10 years and covers your immediate family. That makes GMRS popular for families, farms and off-road groups who want more range than FRS without studying for a ham license.

Questions

How do I get a GMRS license?

Apply on the FCC's website: register for an FCC Registration Number (FRN), then apply for GMRS in the license system. The fee is $35, there's no exam, and you get a call sign that covers your immediate family for 10 years.

Can GMRS radios talk to FRS radios?

Yes. FRS and GMRS share the same 22 channels, so a GMRS radio can talk to an FRS walkie talkie. The FRS radio is just limited to lower power.

Can I use a ham radio for GMRS?

No. A radio has to be certified for GMRS to transmit on GMRS, even if a ham radio can tune those frequencies.
