DMR Radios

DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) is a digital voice mode that splits each channel into two time slots, so one repeater carries two conversations at once. On ham radio, DMR repeaters connect to networks like BrandMeister, where talkgroups link users by region or interest worldwide.

Getting on DMR takes a little more than analog. You need an amateur license, a DMR ID from RadioID.net, and a codeplug, the file that programs your radio's channels, contacts and talkgroups. Most radios here also do analog, so they still work on regular repeaters.

Questions

Do I need a license for DMR?

Yes, for ham DMR. You need an amateur license to transmit, and a DMR ID, which RadioID.net issues against your call sign.

What is a codeplug?

It's the configuration file for a DMR radio: channels, zones, contacts and talkgroups. You build or download one with the radio's programming software and load it over a USB cable.

What does Tier II or dual slot mean?

Tier II is the DMR standard ham repeaters use, with two time slots per frequency. A dual-slot radio can work with both slots, which is what repeater users need.
