Antennas, Mounts and Analyzers

An antenna upgrade is the cheapest range improvement you can buy. The stubby antenna that ships with most handhelds is a compromise, and a longer whip often makes a bigger difference than more watts.

Match two things before ordering. First the band: dual-band ham antennas are tuned for 2 meters and 70 centimeters, and GMRS antennas for 462 to 467 MHz. Nagoya marks its GMRS versions with a G. Then the connector: SMA male and SMA female look alike and don't mix, so check what your radio takes.

Questions

Will a ham antenna work on GMRS?

It may tune close enough to work, but a dual-band ham antenna isn't made for 462 to 467 MHz. A GMRS-tuned antenna gives a better match on GMRS.

What is an NMO mount?

NMO (New Motorola) is the standard mobile antenna mount. Install an NMO mount once, as a magnet, lip or through-roof mount, and you can swap antennas onto it.

Do I need an antenna analyzer?

Not to get started, but it's the tool that tells you whether an antenna is tuned for the band you use. Our NanoVNA guide shows how we test antennas.
