Power Supplies and Amplifiers

To run a mobile radio at home you need a regulated 13.8-volt power supply rated above the radio's transmit current. Battery eliminators do the same job for handhelds, powering them from a car outlet instead of the battery.

VHF and UHF amplifiers boost a handheld to mobile power levels. They need a good antenna to be worth it, and the amplifier's own power supply.

Questions

What size power supply do I need?

Check the radio's transmit current and leave headroom. A 50-watt mobile typically draws 10 to 12 amps on transmit, so a 20 to 30 amp supply covers it with room to spare.

Does an amplifier need a license?

Amplifiers here are for amateur bands, so using one needs an amateur license, the same as the radio driving it.
