Programming Cables and Adapters

A programming cable turns an evening of keying in channels by hand into a few minutes. Load a repeater list from free software like CHIRP, or the radio maker's own program, and write it to the radio over USB.

Buy the cable listed for your radio. The plug on the radio end varies by model, and cheap cables with the wrong chip often won't connect at all.

Questions

Do I need a programming cable?

Not strictly, since you can program channels from the keypad. But a cable and CHIRP make it much faster to set up repeaters and to copy the same setup to several radios.

What is an APRS cable for?

It connects a radio's audio to a phone or computer so software can send and decode APRS packets, for radios without APRS built in.
