Ham, GMRS and Two-Way Radios

Radios and gear from BTECH and Radioddity, sorted the way people actually shop: by what license you have, and what you want the radio to do. Every page filters by band, analog or DMR, and features like GPS, Bluetooth and waterproofing.

Start with the license. Ham radios need an amateur license, which means passing the Technician exam. GMRS radios need a GMRS license, which has no test. FRS, MURS and CB radios need no license at all. The category pages explain each one.

Questions

Which radio should I buy first?

It depends on the license. With no license, an FRS radio is the simplest start. With a GMRS license, a GMRS handheld or mobile can use repeaters and covers your whole family. With a Technician ham license, a dual-band VHF/UHF handheld reaches almost every local repeater.

Do I need a license to use these radios?

Ham (amateur) radios need an FCC amateur license to transmit, earned by passing an exam. GMRS radios need an FCC GMRS license, which has no exam. FRS, MURS and CB radios can be used without a license.
