Meshtastic Firmware Releases

Every Meshtastic release since 2025, newest first: which version to run, what changed, and which builds were pulled.

Release list last checked against GitHub on October 23, 2026.

What to Run Now

Our advice: Stay on 2.7.26, the current stable release, unless your device needs 2.8 (such as the Wio Tracker L2 Pro) or you want Ham Mode. 2.8.1 is still an alpha and changes several defaults, and 2.7 and 2.8 nodes talk to each other. What changes in 2.8.

How Meshtastic Releases Work

  • Alpha builds come out every few weeks with new features and fixes. They're tested, but they're where problems show up first.
  • Beta is Meshtastic's name for its stable channel. A few times a year, an alpha that's held up well is promoted to Beta.
  • Revoked builds were withdrawn after a serious bug was found. Don't install one, and move any node running one to the next release.
  • The part after the version number, like 8e6a88d, identifies the exact build. Meshtastic sometimes re-releases a version number with a new build after a fix.

To update, use the web flasher. Our firmware guide covers each update method and what to do if a flash fails.

All Releases

  1. 2.8.1 8e6a88d Alpha

Current 2.8 alpha. New US nodes set up on the device screen start on LongTurbo, broadcasts are signed, node IDs come from the public key, and position and telemetry sharing are off by default on public channels.

  2. 2.8.0 47db0e3 AlphaRevoked

Revoked twice: first for a radio startup bug, then for a flaw in packet signing. Its signatures don't work with 2.8.1, so move any 2.8.0 node to 2.8.1.

  3. 2.8.0 7239fe8 AlphaRevoked

Revoked twice: first for a radio startup bug, then for a flaw in packet signing. Its signatures don't work with 2.8.1, so move any 2.8.0 node to 2.8.1.

Firmware Version FAQ

What is the latest Meshtastic firmware?

The latest stable release is 2.7.26 (June 24, 2026). The newest alpha is 2.8.1 (October 1, 2026). Meshtastic labels its stable releases Beta.

Should I install the alpha?

Only if you need something in it or like testing. Alphas get new features first and are pulled (revoked) when a serious bug turns up. For a node other people rely on, use the stable release.

What does revoked mean?

Meshtastic withdraws a release when it finds a serious problem, and marks it revoked on GitHub. If a node is on a revoked build, move it to the next release.

Can nodes on different firmware versions talk to each other?

Yes, within reason. 2.7 and 2.8 nodes exchange messages, though 2.8-only features like signing only work between 2.8 nodes. Very old firmware (before about 2.3) is dropped by 2.8 nodes.
