Recommended Antennas
Prices are approximate and may vary by vendor
Upgrading your antenna is often the single biggest improvement you can make to range. Stock antennas are usually 0-2 dBi - these replacements offer better performance.
Portable & Handheld
Muzi Whip 17cm

- • 17cm flexible whip, 14g
- • SWR 1.3 (98% efficiency)
- • SMA Male connector
MESHTAC 2.5 dBi Whip

- • 2.5 dBi gain, 7.8" tall
- • Soft flexible design
- • SMA Male, 915 MHz
Outdoor & Base Station
ALFA 5 dBi Mini

- • 5 dBi gain, 7" tall
- • N-Male connector
- • Weather resistant
RAK 5.8 dBi Fiberglass

- • Fiberglass, weatherproof
- • Includes U-bolt mount
ALFA 12 dBi Yagi

- • 12 dBi directional gain
- • N-Female connector
- • Point-to-point links
Antenna Selection Tips
- • Higher dBi = narrower beam - 8+ dBi antennas focus energy horizontally, bad for hilly terrain
- • Connector types: Most devices use SMA. Outdoor antennas often use N-type (need adapter cable)
- • Placement matters more than gain - A 3 dBi antenna up high beats an 8 dBi in your basement
- • Buy 915 MHz for US - 868 MHz antennas are for Europe and won't work as well here
Batteries & Power
Prices are approximate and may vary by vendor
Quality batteries are essential for mesh nodes. Most devices use 18650 or 21700 cells, while compact trackers use LiPo packs.
Warning: Avoid Amazon 18650/21700 Batteries
Most 18650 and 21700 batteries sold on Amazon are counterfeit. They typically have false mAh ratings (a "5000mAh" cell may actually be 800mAh), lack proper protection circuits, and can be fire hazards. Always buy from reputable battery-specific retailers like 18650 Battery Store, IMR Batteries, or Liion Wholesale.
18650 Cells (Protected)
For devices like T-Beam with 18650 battery holders. Protected cells include a circuit to prevent over-discharge and short circuits.
Samsung 35E Protected

- • 3500mAh capacity, 8A max
- • Protected button top

- • Premium Japanese cells
Panasonic NCR18650GA

- • 3450mAh capacity, 10A max
- • Protected button top
- • Panasonic quality
21700 Cells
Larger format with higher capacity. Used in some newer devices and DIY builds. Usually don't need protected versions for low-drain mesh devices.
Samsung 50S

- • 5000mAh capacity, 25A max
- • Flat top unprotected
- • Industry standard cell
Molicel P50B

- • 5000mAh capacity, 50A max

MeshCore Hardware FAQ
The questions our community gets most often before buying a first MeshCore node.
What is the cheapest MeshCore device for beginners?
The Heltec V3 ($20-30) is the most affordable MeshCore-compatible LoRa node. It has an ESP32-S3, SX1262 radio, 0.96" OLED, and works with the MeshCore web flasher in Chrome or Edge. Buy the 915 MHz (US) version.
Do I need 915 MHz or 868 MHz for MeshCore in the United States?
In the United States, including North Dakota, MeshCore runs on 915 MHz. Buy the 915 MHz (US) variant of any device. The 868 MHz (EU) version uses different LoRa frequencies and will not interoperate with US mesh networks.
What is the best MeshCore device for a solar repeater?
For a solar-powered MeshCore repeater, the SenseCAP Solar Node P1-Pro ($89.90), Atlavox Beacon ($235.99), and PEAKmesh handcrafted nodes are popular choices. They use ultra-low-power nRF52840-based RAK WisBlock cores and integrate solar panels, charge controllers, and weatherproof enclosures.
Which MeshCore device has a built-in keyboard?
The LilyGo T-Deck ($43-53) and T-Deck Plus ($65-85) include full QWERTY keyboards and color touchscreens. The T-Deck Plus adds GPS and a 2000 mAh battery for fully standalone MeshCore messaging without a phone.
How do I flash MeshCore firmware on a new device?
Use the MeshCore Web Flasher at flasher.meshcore.io in Chrome or Edge. Connect the device via USB, put it in DFU/bootloader mode (usually a double-tap reset or hold BOOT during plug-in), and select the right firmware. NodakMesh has full DFU instructions per device at /meshcore/setup.
MeshCore vs Meshtastic — which firmware should I run?
MeshCore is newer, lower-overhead, and built around explicit room-server and repeater roles. Meshtastic has the larger user base and more apps. Most modern LoRa devices (Heltec V3, T-Beam, T-Deck, RAK WisBlock, Wio Tracker, SenseCAP) support both — pick one and flash. NodakMesh has a side-by-side comparison at /hardware-comparison and /blog/meshcore-vs-meshtastic-comparison.
What antenna upgrade gives the most range on a MeshCore node?
For handheld nodes the Muzi 17cm whip ($12) and ALFA 90° elbow ($12) are popular upgrades over stock 2 dBi antennas. For fixed repeaters mounted on a building or vehicle, a 5.8 dBi RAK fiberglass or 8 dBi low-profile omnidirectional antenna gives the best community-mesh range. Placement (height and clear sightlines) matters more than raw gain.
Buying Tips
Where to Buy
- Amazon - Fast shipping, easy returns, but prices may be higher
- AliExpress - Best prices, but 2-4 week shipping from China
- Rokland - US-based, good selection, mesh-focused
- Manufacturer Direct - RAK, LilyGo, Heltec, Seeed official stores
- DigiKey - US-based, huge selection, fast shipping, professional-grade parts
What to Avoid
- 868 MHz (EU) versions - won't work in US
- Unknown brand clones - often poor quality radios
- Devices without SX1262/SX1276 LoRa chips
- Used devices without testing (LoRa chips can degrade)
