What the Mesh Looks Like in North Dakota

North Dakota is the rare U.S. state where LoRa mesh networking actually plays to the terrain. Long flat horizons, scattered population centers, and elevation we can use (grain elevators, fire towers, water towers, rural homes on hills). A repeater on a hilltop here can cover ground that the same hardware in a dense city couldn't dream of. That's the whole reason this network exists. We're building the kind of off-grid communication infrastructure that the land itself is suited for.

The people running nodes are a mix. Some are hams who've been pointing antennas at the sky for thirty years. Some are first responders and SAR volunteers who care about communication that works when cell service doesn't. Some are farmers who want a way to text the next quarter over without a tower. Some are preparedness-minded and treat this as resilience infrastructure. Some are just hobbyists who think LoRa is fun. Everyone is welcome, and the network is better when those perspectives sit in the same channel.

Day-to-day coordination happens on Discord (linked below). In-person happens at occasional meetups in Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks, and Minot. The Discord is where we troubleshoot, share builds, plan deployments, and watch the map fill in over time. If you've got a node on your roof in Williston or a repeater on a tower outside Jamestown, drop in and tell us. The network grows from individuals choosing to put hardware up. There's no central authority deciding where coverage lives.
